$100,000 Bounty Placed on Iranian Rapper Shahin Najafi’s Head

Freedom of expression, artistic or otherwise, comes with a high price in some segments of the world. According to some conservative Shia leaders in Iran, Shahin, a popular Iranian rapper, has released blasphemous material that insults the 10th Shia Imam, Ali Ibn Muhammad, also known as al-Naqi. A $100,000 bounty has been placed on Shahin’s head as result.

Shahin is hiding somewhere in Germany under police protection in fear for his life.

Shahin’s album cover (above) would even cause a stir in the United States where freedom supposedly reins – so you already know they’re going ballistic in Iran. The graphic shows a caricature of a revered Islamic religious dome being depicted as a woman’s breast with a rainbow flag planted in the tip of the nipple. The rainbow flag is the symbol for the gay/lesbian/transgender movement.

This guy I know was arranging small 4×4 sized bits of printed paper on the floor of the lobby of my studio. I asked him what it was and he told me it was the latest edition of a magazine that he publishes. “A magazine?”, I said. It looked pretty amazing and immediately captured my attention. I asked a few more questions and found out that he and his team were preparing to publish the first limited-quantity inaugural print edition. He also told me that their premier 1/2 edition is available as a free download on the iTunes magazine stand.

The magazine is called Leveled and is chock-full of edgy photography and commentary representing the LA lifestyle. Like I said, it’s a free iPad download so you owe it to yourself to check it out. If you enjoy it then please tell a friend. These guys aren’t working with any major sponsorship or funding. They’re driven by the pure passion and enjoyment of their craft.
