I was browsing the USA Today headlines on my iPhone. One item that caught my attention read: “Danica Finishes Strong at Michigan”. I thought, “Wow, she must have come in like 4th maybe even 3rd place.” I read the article. Apparently Mike Hembree, the article’s author and USA Today are of the opinion that finishing 13th is somehow strong. I admit that I don’t know a whole lot about NASCAR. I’m pretty sure however that there isn’t a sport on the planet who’s participants would consider 13th a strong finish. I think USA Today has fallen victim to what I call “The Danica Syndrome”.

One may argue that the “Danica Syndrome” is not unlike the “Tiger Syndrome”, whereas Tiger Woods makes headlines even when he looses simply because he is the biggest name in the sport. The difference here however is that Woods became the biggest name in golf not for being one of the few African Americans to play in the PGA, but for being one of the greatest to ever swing a club. Danica captures headlines because she is basically the only female to compete amongst the boys in the upper-echelon of auto racing. Her accomplishments are noteworthy and should be applauded, however, there’s nothing on her resume that screams great.

I am not naive. Danica Patrick happens to be very attractive and is a marketing dream. She has become the face (and body) of NASCAR. She is what they call “good for the sport”. I must admit that her name alone does grasp attention and imaginations. Her name is what drew me to the USA Today article in the first place. There’s no crime in mentioning her. People are curious. My whole point however is that maybe we should save the honors and accolades for the occasions when greatness is really achieved. Otherwise its like saying, “she did really good… for a girl.” Insulting to say the least.

13th is not a “strong” finish people.

With so many school districts in the U.S. struggling to meet the most basic educational needs of its students, there will be many who look upon the new $60Mil high school football stadium being built in Allen Texas with disdain and perhaps a bit of envy. Excessive and unnecessary? Maybe. Inspiring and monumental? Definitely!

To say high school football is big in Texas is a colossal understatement. The future home to the Allen Eagles football team, the stadium was funded by a voter-approved bond measure. The stadium boast 18,000 seats, a 75-by-45 foot HD video scoreboard, a weight room, a press room and private boxes. Season tickets are completely sold out. The stadium will officially open in August 2013.
