The Danica Syndrome

June 16, 2013  |  Celebrity, Culture, Model, Sports  |  No Comments

I was browsing the USA Today headlines on my iPhone. One item that caught my attention read: “Danica Finishes Strong at Michigan”. I thought, “Wow, she must have come in like 4th maybe even 3rd place.” I read the article. Apparently Mike Hembree, the article’s author and USA Today are of the opinion that finishing 13th is somehow strong. I admit that I don’t know a whole lot about NASCAR. I’m pretty sure however that there isn’t a sport on the planet who’s participants would consider 13th a strong finish. I think USA Today has fallen victim to what I call “The Danica Syndrome”. With so many school districts in the U.S. struggling to meet the most basic educational needs of its students, there will be many who look upon the new $60Mil high school football stadium being built in Allen Texas with disdain and perhaps a bit of envy. Excessive and unnecessary? Maybe. Inspiring and monumental? Definitely! Read More

Macklemore - Wings

Macklemore – Wings

There’s two comments I’d like to make about Macklemore’s popular basketball themed video, “Wings”. The first is that I really respect the lesson in the song which I interpreted as being one of anti-consumerism and which also contains a message to the youth to reject the idea that your identity and “coolness” begin with an object or label. I love shinny things as much as anybody else, but in a world inundated with bling music, it’s refreshing to hear an opposing message to balance things out a bit. Read More

Worlds Highest Tennis Court | Dubai

No other tennis court in the world has quite the view (or drop) as the one at the Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai. Located more than 650 ft (200 m) above ground, the hotel’s grass helipad was converted into a 4500 sq ft (415 sq m) tennis court to promote the Dubai Open back in 2005. Longtime rivals Andre Agassi and Roger Federer had the opportunity to play on the court and even fired a few balls off the edge. Read More
