I was browsing the USA Today headlines on my iPhone. One item that caught my attention read: “Danica Finishes Strong at Michigan”. I thought, “Wow, she must have come in like 4th maybe even 3rd place.” I read the article. Apparently Mike Hembree, the article’s author and USA Today are of the opinion that finishing 13th is somehow strong. I admit that I don’t know a whole lot about NASCAR. I’m pretty sure however that there isn’t a sport on the planet who’s participants would consider 13th a strong finish. I think USA Today has fallen victim to what I call “The Danica Syndrome”. There’s two comments I’d like to make about Macklemore’s popular basketball themed video, “Wings”. The first is that I really respect the lesson in the song which I interpreted as being one of anti-consumerism and which also contains a message to the youth to reject the idea that your identity and “coolness” begin with an object or label. I love shinny things as much as anybody else, but in a world inundated with bling music, it’s refreshing to hear an opposing message to balance things out a bit. Read More

This past weekend, Artest announced the winner of a raffle for the NBA championship ring he won last season with the Lakers. More than $500,000 was raised for his Xcel University charity, which will work with high-risk youth on mental health issues.
