Porn Star to Pop Star? Lupe Fuentes and The Ex-Girlfriends (Video)

February 6, 2013  |  Celebrity, Culture, Film, Music, Music Video

When was the last time you actually tried to seek out a particular pop-up add? Most of us would answer “never” to that question. However while surfing the net one day, this pop-up ad blaring a dance song and video performed by some provocatively clad young women appeared on my screen. I watched it for maybe 10 seconds before I clicked out of it. Later, a delayed reaction triggered the facial recognition system in my brain. It was telling me that I had seen or possibly knew someone in the video I had seen earlier that day. Purely out of curiosity, I retraced my internet steps from the previous day and sure enough, the same pop-up page with the girls and the video appeared. I discovered that the five-member groups’ name is The Ex-Girlfriends (XGF). Upon closer examination I realized that I didn’t personally know the face that caught my attention, but I had in fact seen her before.

I’ll come clean. I’ve watched an adult video or two, but strictly for, ahem, research and informational purposes I assure you. I recognized the face from my research activities. Her name is Lupe Fuentes and she is a former adult film performer.

The purpose of this article is not to cast judgement but merely to pose a question. If we accept you in our dark rooms while our computer screens cast their blueish-white glow on our wide-eyed sweaty faces then will we accept and support you in the wide-open spotlighted world of pop-culture? In other words, can you successfully cross over from adult film actress to main-stream pop music? I’m certain that whoever is promoting the XGF project has considered this and has determined that a “re-branding” of the Lupe Fuentes name is in order. This is evident from reading the ABOUT section from the XGF web site which states:

“Webster’s defines the word “reinvent” as “to make as if for the first time something already invented.” This is exactly what Lupe Fuentes has worked so diligently over the last two years to do for herself and her career. Never ashamed of her past but rather finding her passion and doing everything in her power to bring it to fruition, Lupe is excited to transmute her fame as the largest and most successful internet star in the history of adult entertainment to her new musical career.”

I googled “porn star crossover” and came up with several examples of adult film performers who have crossed over successfully in the film industry but none that stood out in music. To date XGF has garnered about 104K Facebook likes and around 1.4Mil views on their video “We Are The Party”. I suspect a lot of those views were forced from the pop-up like the one I was exposed to.

Time will tell if Lupe Fuentes and XGF will reach Spice Girl status. I suspect however that the product will need to be really good and reach beyond just being famous for being infamous. Kim Kardashian already has that lane covered.

  1. Well apart from the porn-to-pop transitin thing, the music effort of this poor little girl is quite the epic fail.
Another example of this kind of crossover is the french x porn star Clara Morgan, wit an equally pitiful musical effort that stands far behind her abilities as a movie prostitute.

  2. Thanks for the comment. I googled Clara Morgan since I’ve never heard of her before. She seems to have had a successful post-porn career although not so much in the music biz. What struck me when I read her wiki was the following sentence: “she often appears on national TV and provides a kind of socially acceptable, family friendly representation of porn.” I never thought I would hear the words “family friendly” and “porn” in the same sentence. LOL.
